Mr. Charles Evers - Station Manager WMPR 90.1 FM

Mr. Charles Evers is the station manager for WMPR. He has faithfully served in this capacity since the reorganization of the station in November 1987. Mr. Evers brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise to the Jackson media community. He launched a career in radio as a disc jockey at WHOC in Philadelphia, Mississippi back in 1949-50. Following this, he began his journey as a civil rights activist and freedom fighter in 1963 at the untimely death of his brother, Medgar Evers. Charles Evers served in the capacity as Field Secretary for the NAACP, where he and other prominent civil rights leaders such as the Rev. Martin Luther King, Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer, Mr. Aaron Henry, Ralph Abernathy and many others worked to break down the walls of segregation, poverty, and racism throughout the South.

Mr. Evers continues his work as a civil rights activist and advocate for human rights throughout the United States. Actively sought out as a public speaker nationwide, he motivates young people, black and white alike to work together, seek better understanding and strive to make our community a better place to live. He hosts the weekly talk show "Let's talk", which features a call in segment as well as local and national guests.

Mr. Evers and B.B. King sponsor the Medgar Evers Homecoming Festival, a three-day annual event held the first week of June in Mississippi. This event features parades, gospel festivities and a blues show to celebrate the life and work of the late civil rights activist, Medgar Evers.

There have been two books written on the life of Mr. Charles Evers. The first book, entitled "EVERS" was written in 1971 and outlined his life. The second book, "HAVE NO FEAR" was written in 1997 and outlines his role in the civil rights movement and participation in the present struggles for civil rights and humanity
